Description of Product
This Rangemaster treble booster is built inside a compact enclosure finished with illuminated Viking bird skull artwork.
The artwork forms part of the pedal rather than simply sitting on the surface. When the pedal is engaged the skull glows from within the enclosure, giving the piece a distinctive presence on a pedalboard without becoming distracting in use.
Inside the enclosure the circuit follows the traditional Rangemaster architecture and is hand wired on tagboard using period correct construction methods. The layout remains open and visible in the same way early amplifier circuits were assembled.
The signal path uses blue moulded capacitors of the type commonly found in 1960s blackface Fender and Magnatone amplifiers. These components are valued for their stability and the way they carry high frequencies without becoming brittle.
Within the input network sits a large British made RS Components 1.5Kv capacitor alongside a substantial NOS Orange Drop capacitor used within the tone shaping stage. These parts were selected after testing for the way they behave under signal rather than appearance alone.
The transistor used here is a gold pin 2N4964 silicon device. These transistors are known for their stable gain and consistent behaviour, allowing the circuit to deliver a clear and authoritative boost while retaining the responsiveness expected from a Rangemaster style design.
Control is provided by a six position rotary EQ selector. This allows the traditional treble booster voice to move across several frequency ranges rather than remaining locked to a single upper mid emphasis.
A vintage NOS CTS potentiometer handles the output control. These pots were widely used in American amplifiers and instruments and are known for their smooth mechanical feel and predictable taper.
Every connection inside the pedal is hand soldered and the entire circuit is assembled slowly with the intention that it remains understandable and serviceable many years from now.
There is a small cosmetic imperfection in the finish around one of the enclosure screws where the coating has chipped slightly. It does not affect the structure or operation of the pedal in any way.
For that reason this build has been priced with a £30 reduction.
Description of Sound
The Rangemaster circuit was originally designed to drive the first gain stage of a valve amplifier harder while shaping the upper midrange of the guitar signal.
With the EQ selector set to the traditional treble position the pedal delivers the familiar bright push that tightens the low end and helps single notes sit forward in a mix. Into an amplifier that is already beginning to break up this produces the articulate lead tones that made the circuit widely used in the late sixties and early seventies.
Moving through the six EQ positions gradually shifts the emphasis lower through the frequency range. The sound moves from the classic treble boost into a broader midrange push and eventually into a fuller range boost that adds weight without losing clarity.
The 2N4964 silicon transistor produces a firmer attack than germanium versions of the circuit. Notes arrive with more immediacy and the boost can feel more direct when driving an amplifier.
Despite the silicon device the circuit still responds closely to the guitar volume control. Rolling the guitar back cleans the signal while leaving the tonal shaping in place. Opening it again pushes the amplifier into sustained lead tones.
Like all Rangemaster style circuits, its behaviour is closely tied to the amplifier placed after it.
Real World Testimonials
Excellent Rangemaster. One of the best and most useful ones I have played.
Reverb feedback
A genius bit of design.
AM Guitar review
A treble booster with a lot to offer all guitarists.
Medium review

This pedal is a single build.
The illuminated Viking artwork and the particular combination of components used here will not be repeated in exactly the same way again.
This version is offered with a £30 reduction due to the small cosmetic chip in the finish around one screw.
If it speaks to you, it is available.
