Description of Product
This is a one off Hello Sailor Rangemaster built around the question that keeps coming up with treble boosters.
Why do some of them make an amplifier feel alive, while others simply make it brighter?
This build takes the Rangemaster idea and gives it almost every useful option I offer in one pedal.
There is a boost control, a gain control, a switch for the standard treble boost voice or a fatter EQ setting, and a second switch to move between silicon and germanium.
The silicon side uses a modern transistor for a more immediate, firm, and stable response.
The germanium side uses a NOS Military Spec Transistor, bringing in that softer edge and old circuit feel that makes these things so addictive through the right amplifier.
It is hand wired on tagboard, built as a one off piece, and finished in fluorescent pink with electric blue nitrocellulose lacquer over the top.
The artwork is a Jessica Rabbit inspired variation, covered in tattoos to tie it back into the sailor side of Hello Sailor Effects.
It is loud, colourful, slightly ridiculous, and exactly the sort of thing a Rangemaster should be when it stops behaving like a museum piece.
Description of Sound
In the standard treble boost setting, this has the classic Rangemaster push.
It tightens the bottom end, brings the upper mids forward, and gives the amp that cutting, vocal quality that works so well for old blues rock, British rock, and pushed valve amps.
The fat setting gives it more body.
Instead of simply slicing through the mix, it starts to fill out the front of the amplifier with more weight and low mid content. This is the setting for players who love the Rangemaster feel but sometimes want more authority under the note.
The silicon side feels sharper and more immediate.
The germanium side feels a little softer, more elastic, and more forgiving under the fingers.
Between the two EQ voices and the silicon or germanium switch, this can move from focused treble booster to thick vintage amp pusher without losing the touch sensitivity that makes the circuit worth using in the first place.
