DESCRIPTION

Long before guitarists filled pedalboards with boosters, overdrives and buffers, there was another problem entirely.

Early electric guitars were often being plugged into equipment that had never really been designed for them.

Valve radios.

Radiograms.

Tape machines.

Primitive amplifiers.

The result was often a guitar that sounded weak, flat and lacking in life.

Small preamps like this were created to solve exactly that problem.

The Hello Sailor Hofner Harmonic Preamp is my recreation of one of those fascinating forgotten circuits. It comes from that strange period of guitar history before effects pedals really existed. It is not quite a booster, not quite an effect, but an important stepping stone in the evolution of electric guitar tone.

Rather than colouring your sound with heavy gain or compression, this circuit restores harmonic richness, improves the relationship between your guitar and amplifier, and gives the instrument a more immediate, responsive feel beneath your fingers.

The effect is wonderfully natural.

Single coils gain body and sparkle without losing clarity.

Humbuckers retain their warmth while becoming more articulate.

Clean amplifiers feel more alive.

The harder you play, the more the circuit responds.

This version remains faithful to the original design.

At its heart is a genuine military specification NKT germanium transistor, supplied in its original military packaging before being individually selected and tested for use in this circuit. These transistors were built to an exceptionally high standard and are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making each pedal a small piece of British electronic history.

To preserve the behaviour of the original circuit, this pedal operates from an internal 9 volt battery using the traditional positive ground configuration, exactly as these early harmonic preamps did during the birth of electric guitar.

Every pedal is completely hand wired on traditional tagboard using carefully chosen components before being individually built, tested and auditioned here in my workshop.

This is not simply another clean boost.

It is a forgotten piece of guitar history, faithfully brought back to life for modern players.
