Description of Product
This pedal began with a very familiar circuit idea.
The classic Distortion Plus format is simple on paper but has a very particular behaviour once you hear it through an amplifier. It sits in that space between overdrive and distortion where the signal begins to compress and clip but still responds strongly to the guitar.
Rather than building a modern clone on a printed board, this version was constructed using a traditional two row turretboard layout. The same style of construction used in early amplifier circuits.
Every component is placed by hand and wired point to point. No printed circuit board. No surface mount parts. Just a physical layout you can see and follow.
At the centre of the circuit is a matched set of red top Mullard OC139 germanium transistors. These parts are responsible for the soft clipping character that defines this style of distortion. Germanium devices tend to round the edges of the signal rather than cutting it sharply. The result is a distortion that feels slightly elastic under the fingers rather than rigid.
Where possible the build uses older stock components taken from the workshop drawers. The intention was to keep the behaviour close to the spirit of the early circuits that inspired it.
The enclosure itself is finished with a fabric wrap. A one off appearance that will not be repeated exactly.
Controls remain deliberately simple.

That simplicity is part of the reason this circuit has lasted so long.
Description of Sound
The sound sits directly between driven amplifier and distortion pedal.
Into a clean amplifier the pedal produces a focused crunch that reacts strongly to picking dynamics. The attack stays sharp but the edges of the note soften slightly as the germanium devices begin to clip.
With the distortion control lower the pedal behaves more like a driven preamp. Chords remain clear and the guitar volume control becomes very usable.
As the control increases the circuit develops a thicker compression and a grainier distortion character. The clipping remains rounded rather than harsh, which keeps the sound from becoming brittle in the upper frequencies.
Lead lines sustain easily while still retaining a clear edge to the note. It is a tone that feels aggressive without becoming abrasive.
This is the character that made the early versions of this circuit stand out in the first place.
This pedal was built as a single Hello Sailor Effects experiment exploring a germanium based version of the Distortion Plus style circuit.
The fabric finished enclosure and this exact component combination will not appear again in the same form.
If this particular interpretation of the circuit speaks to you, it is available now through the Hello Sailor Effects shop.
